On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed an executive order sending 120,000 Japanese Americans to remote internment camps. The exhibit, “Surpassing Adversity: The Japanese American Journey” celebrates the resilience of those Japanese Americans. They brought only what they could carry to ten prison camps in desolate areas of California, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming and Arkansas. The Irvington Historical Society thanks all of those who have lent their mementos to this exhibit, which commemorates the local volunteers who made the Pan Am Games a turning point in Indianapolis history.  From pieces of the Disney castle in the opening ceremony, to volunteer badges, to animation cels, to banners, manuals and personal pictures, visitors get a feel for what this event meant to those involved. It is amazing what has been valued and carefully kept for 30 years!

To while away the time, they carved birds.  Carver Bob Lawrence will lead a beginning woodcarving session to create your own bird pin.  Like those exhibited in Surpassing Adversity: The Japanese American Journey. Registration required. This session is limited to those over 18 years of age. Cost $25. All supplied will be provided. Bring a pair of work gloves that can be cut up. Very different from earlier programs! One of the Irvington Summer Music Festival's goals was to present a variety of musical genres across Irvington venues.  Here is the classical music segment.
